The mission of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program is to provide free tax help to low and moderate income individuals and families, persons with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their tax returns from reliable tax professionals.
Last year the VITA program helped prepare more than 3.5 million tax returns nationally. This was only made possible by the 82,000 people who volunteered their time to become trained and certified in tax law and assist these people. Poverty affects everyone and Merced County is no different. Our hard-working families can't often afford the $200-$300 cost associated with having their tax return prepared. This program helps put money back into the pocket of these families, by guaranteeing their maximum refund without costing them a dime.
